ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify the key elements underlying a destination capability, and to examine how these components interact to foster destination development. It uses the model presented by Haugland, which is structured around three major concepts: destination capabilities, coordination at the destination level, inter-destination bridge ties. The contribution offered by the inter-destination bridge ties may be traced along two dimensions: imitation and innovation. The chapter analyses skipassfree case study along three stages: its genesis', its development, and last but not least its implementation through the use of a contractual form. It analyses the development of a product achieved by the Livigno resort, Italy. The chapter outlines some points on how destination capabilities related to the development of new products are generated. It presents a case study, which shows the importance of relations with other destinations: innovation may in fact be inspired by successful initiatives already developed by other areas.
