ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the primacy of popular control as a building block of civic culture and understands the ins-and-outs of popular control and civic culture provides insights into the various mechanisms that link the social and economic construction of a city to its global environment. It focuses on civic culture of the city of Calgary should be a central focus of academic and policy discussions because civic culture is about making choices in harnessing local capacity despite global economic changes. The city of Calgary benefits from the input of a surprisingly large number of groups. The chapter examines 80 different citizen groups, neighborhood associations; advisory boards and other interest groups were identified. Calgary is a rich example of the many mechanisms that business-led governments can implement to successfully manage contemporary large cities. In Calgary, local agency exists in the form of vibrant and influential business communities that make the politics of place.
