ABSTRACT
Sustainable transport has been the subject of a great many books, articles and research papers and there are many public policies and corporate initiatives to reduce the environmental and social impacts of urban transport. Comparatively little attention has been directed towards activities at the local scale, with most given to individuals, cities, companies and governments; community ownership is not considered in the conventional discourse. This chapter makes a case for the role of community ownership in efforts to move towards sustainable transport and begins by suggesting that community ownership can make a unique contribution.
