ABSTRACT

Living communally or adopting a cooperative or selforganising approach for producing, consuming and distributing goods and services has roots in specific political philosophies, ideas and ideals. Undertaking such arrangements as a strategy for environmentally sustainable living created a new type of communal living, or at least, a new rationale for doing so. Community ownership of transport can be seen as fitting in to this form of eco-communalism. Knowing something of the origins of these ideas provides insights into this aspect of communityowned transport and places the concept into its political and philosophical context.
