ABSTRACT

In a society where people customarily make value judgments based on physical appearance and athletic prowess, where athletics figure prominently in the public education system from primary education through higher education, where professional athletes are idolized, where media devote significant attention to sports events and news, and where the influence of sports is ubiquitous, finding a way to “fit in” can be especially challenging for individuals who have physical disabilities. For those whose physical disability is of such a nature that it requires the use of a powerchair, even greater challenges exist.
