ABSTRACT

Do members of a multi-functional Design-Build Team (DBT) have to sit together to ensure the best possible intra-team and cross-functional communication? Do they need to be physically co-located, that is, sharing the same office space? As Boeing’s Alan Mulally writes:

Co-location stimulates communication by interaction. So, co-location is certainly beneficial for the multi-functional design-build process based on concurrent ways of working. However, some people, especially in high-tech industries, have suggested that electronic media have somewhat superseded the need for physical co-location. We may wish to call this virtual co-location.
