ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the rationale behind the innovation and how the newly extended NATO SAS-050 approach space was subject to verification using theoretical data. It applies the insights to a large scale military command post exercise. The chapter uses the extended NATO SAS-050 approach to examine the simple 'what' of live-NEC in relation to its position within the approach space and its underlying dynamics. The NATO SAS-050 problem space lacks the metrics to make a precise problem definition but even at a crude level of analysis there is evidently a mismatch. The scenario in this case was an overtly cold-war style of engagement characterised by high familiarity, fairly static rates of change and a strong information position. If the NATO SAS-050 approach space 'is intended to serve as a point of departure for researchers, analysts, and experimenters engaging in C2-related research' then it is legitimate to extend the model.
