ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a complex sociotechnical system and applies Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) to its analysis. Work Domain Analysis is used to describe the domain in which the activity takes place independent of any goals or activities. Control Task Analysis models one or more of these known recurring tasks, focusing on what has to be achieved, independent of how the task is conducted or who undertakes it. Strategies analysis is used to look in more detail at known recurring activities. Social Organisation and Cooperation Analysis models the constraints governing the division of tasks between the resources and addresses how the team communicates and cooperates. Worker Competencies Analysis, involves identifying the competencies that actors require for performing the required activity within the system under analysis. The chapter also explains how the products of the analysis have been used to inform a series of interface designs.
