ABSTRACT

Large screen displays are wall mounted displays implemented in nuclear control rooms under the assumption that they will improve both situation awareness, and collaboration between operators. This chapter describes the application of cognitive work analysis (CWA) and ecological interface design (EID) to evaluate these claims. It focuses on discussion around how the requirements of end experiment shaped analysis and design work. Providing a clear example of the entire course of a multi-year project from analysis to design to experimentation illustrates the tangible value of each phase of CWA within a research project. The design of an experiment within the context of a multi-year project can often seem like an afterthought since it is frequently done after the analysis and design. The work domain analysis is most noticeable in the individual graphical forms while the control task analysis (ConTA) and strategies analysis (StrA) will be evident in the configuration of these individual forms, and the overall structure of the interface.
