ABSTRACT

Occasionally there is an issue which is so sensitive that public discussion is considered amoral, heartless or even unjust. In the spirit of openness and challenge which sustainability-thinking encourages, it is appropriate that the legal, social, human rights, safety and economic dimensions of disabled, sick, elderly, obese or other passengers with reduced mobility (the term ‘PRM’ in this text includes all groups) are discussed with the same frankness as other economic airline issues. PRMs are outlier airline customers who need to be managed separately from the passenger mainstream since they comprise many different disabilities, each of which could require individualised airline and/or airport assistance in order to enable travel.
