ABSTRACT

An immigration detention center in New Jersey also reversed its policy of banning turbans in response to requests from human rights groups on behalf of the Sikhs being held at the center. The regulations in federal prisons and jails in Kentucky, Vermont, and New York specifically allow for Sikh articles of faith in the list of permitted religious items for detainees. Other states and individual counties or townships do not have such permissions, and as such, attempts in these areas for relief to the inmate generally are secured on an ad hoc, reactive basis. In Sher Singh's situation, he should not have been detained in the first place, and surely not booted from the train in the manner he was. In other instances, Sikhs who may have been rightly detained have lodged complaints in response to their treatment after being taken into custody. CNN, Fox, and the Associated Press carried video and photos of Sher Singh.
