ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to introduce a project previously named 'The School Mayors of Tehran', a project approved for implementation back in 1993 by the then newly established Office of the Deputy Mayor for Social and Cultural Affairs in Tehran municipality. It is now named 'The School Mayors of Iran' because schools in the other cities of Iran have voluntarily replicated the project, however, in various ways and forms at times different from the original design. The main goal of the project was to provide students at various grade levels an opportunity to learn civic and social participation that involves undertakings deemed to be either non-existent or, at best, very weak. The implementation of the project 'The School Mayors of Iran' has two main aspects. First, after its implementation, it would, on the whole, allow interaction with various actors that have related functions in one way or another. Second, the project requires an organisation of its own.
