ABSTRACT

The period of economic reform of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) started in 1978 and accelerated the rapid development of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in contemporary China. Taking the fi eld of climate change as a case study, this chapter explores how Chinese NGOs adapt and develop over time. After introducing the terminology and development of NGOs in China, the chapter examines the general involvement of Chinese NGOs in the fi eld of climate change, and more specifi cally at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. The chapter will then discuss how the role of Chinese NGOs in this fi eld can be enhanced, before reaching its conclusions.
