ABSTRACT

This chapter documents the establishment of a new campus of Griffith University

in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area close to a major metropolitan city.

Original planning for the campus involved considerable community consultation and

involvement to ensure the development of career-relevant and innovative degrees,

delivery modes and learning-support mechanisms that both matched regional needs

and interests and took advantage of modern communications technology. Engagement

with the local region has been continued and enhanced over time with a strong focus

on facilitation of socioeconomic change and development through the establishment of

strategic alliances with community organizations and increased interaction with local

and state economic development agencies as well as industry and business leaders.
