ABSTRACT

A line in one of the songs of Canadian guitarist Bruce Cockburn goes like this: ‘The trouble with normal is it always gets worse.’1 My undertaking is to puncture ‘normal’ and its cousin ‘normativity’. It is my contention that the ‘normativity’ of the Bible as a repository for ultimate truth provided the essential underscoring for White ethnocentric supremacist perspectives on truth. Through the restrictive lens of Eurocentric truth making, European male scholars were able to mine the Biblical canon for ways of reading that would bolster their belief in the innate superiority of that grand European project.
