ABSTRACT
Episcopacy, family, and religious values – at first glance these all seem well known to
us, with bishops, their image, as well as that of their wives and children, all holding
a place in English cultural life. On further consideration, however, these caricatures
transform into a trio of complexity, challenging analysis yet promising distinctive
insight into the Church of England and its social world.
