ABSTRACT

In this Chapter, Louise Almond develops one of the earliest theoretical frameworks in IP, the Victim Role model (Canter, 1995), developed by Professor Canter during his earliest involvement in cases. This was the idea that as part of the narratives that underpin their crimes, offenders allocated one of 3 abbreviated and sub-human roles to their victims (see Canter and Youngs, 2012 paper on Sexual and Violent Offenders’ role assignments for a detailed specification of Professor Canter’s original theory). It is a framework that has proved remarkably durable.
