ABSTRACT

Play, imagination, and innovation are very closely linked. Play is an attitude, an approach to life that asks imaginative questions and acts out on instinct the qualities and impulses of the natural self. Imagination is the formulation of concepts not present to the senses-a vital act of the mind at play, as the player combines his self with the surrounding environment to conceptualize things that never existed before. These concepts, artifacts, interventions that result from imaginative play may be innovations upon what has existed before, or they may be inventions that create a “new” category of artifact.
