ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to consider the environmental impacts of aviation and tourism. Whilst the impacts of both industries have been widely acknowledged separately, the relationship between the two has received less attention. Given increasing concerns about their sustainability, the aviation and tourism industries are under pressure to demonstrate improved environmental performance. However, this task presents a considerable challenge to both industries since air transport represents a large part of the overall environmental impact of tourism – and because rapid growth of both industries is projected to occur. Nevertheless, the changing preferences of tourists and other stakeholders in favour of sustainable tourism and ‘greener’ flights have significant implications for tourism products and leisure demand.
