ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a national-level certification drive for human resource (HR) professionals in India based on the HR Compass, which is a competency model that captures the technical as well as behavioural competencies required for HR professionals in the country. The National Committee on HR of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) had identified HR Competency Development' as one of the key initiatives to be taken up in 2002. The National Committee on HR assigned the task of preparing an approach and developing the HR Competency Model to a group of five senior HR professionals representing the different industry segments. The committee identified a preliminary set of 19 competencies as relevant for HR professionals. The talent shortage scenario is no different for HR professionals. It is accepted that the last few years have been, and the next few years will remain, the most exciting time for HR in India.
