ABSTRACT
Disputes over the sovereignty of offshore geographic features and the maritime zones surrounding them have long been a source of tension and conflict in many parts of the world. Although the issues of sovereignty and the determination of maritime boundaries are two distinct matters with each governed by different rules of international law, they are often confused and conflated into one.
