ABSTRACT

In this volume, I have laid out a map of overlapping discursive and musical worlds, caught at the intersection between the infrastructures of a dwindling immigrant linguistic subculture now labelled ‘postvernacular’ and a new transcommunal music scene entangled in the wider aesthetics of revival. The institutions of American Yiddish culture have been adapted and reinvigorated, creating new contexts for the transmission and performance of Yiddish cultural materials. At the same time, the notion of a Yiddish song repertory has continually been reimagined: as linguistic performance; as material, printed canon; as a musical-aesthetic praxis; as a shared soundscape.
