ABSTRACT

I visited the hospital in Cettinje[,] beautifully appointed, in days gone by, with elaborate operating apparatus – Rontgen rays, radium etc. Some of it left by the Austrians but all taken away, and diabolical ingenuity shewn in destroying the pans and apparatus of the latrines. There are about 70 patients, lying on mattresses stuffed with straw – ventilation insufficient and drugs very small, and no anaesthetics at all. There is no possibility of real central heating apparatus, because there is very little coal. More beds are being prepared but there is a great danger from lice, which were left behind by the Austrians. There are a few nurses and orderlies and 5 doctors. Outside the hospital no drugs at all can be bought by the poor people because the prices are too high for all except a few. In one ward which I entered ventilation was very bad.
