ABSTRACT

The researcher concluded their presentation, stood back and surveyed the audience with a smile that emanated self-satisfaction and confident self-assurance. The presentation on men’s experience of degenerative disease had been made verbally and visually explicit and subsequently considered for academic discussion. The researcher stood in silence for a few moments before speaking, further emphasising the funereal hush that had permeated the seminar room. (The power of video; the shock and awe of suffering made portable and brought into the lives of the unaffected via digital technology). As the researcher closed down the online video-recorded interviews, featuring desperately unhappy and mentally scarred individuals, voices audibly shaken and stirred began to ripple around the room, breaking the silent reverie and dark contemplation that had descended.
