ABSTRACT

Thus far, Part I of this book has provided a review of visual research and provided an introductory overview of harm reduction. What has emerged from these initial chapters is that although there appears to be meaningful and significant academic overlap between visual methods and harm reduction, there has been less of a concerted effort to advance the notion of an ‘applied visual sociology’ in the field of substance use. Part II of this book therefore attempts to address this disciplinary paucity in providing an account of a specific research design applied to the study of street-based injecting. The intent of this Chapter (and the remainder of this book) is to establish and promote flexible guidelines for conducting methodologicallydriven and applied visual research for use across the social sciences (and especially within sociology).
