ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) system. It identifies the role of ADS-B in the global CNS/ATM, and reviews the requirements, system design, functionalities, as well as supported airborne and ground applications. Furthermore, it analyses the system’s strengths and drawbacks to support ATC surveillance. Finally it analyses potential changes in the role between pilot and Air Traffic Controller (ATCo) to perform ATC functions as a result of ADS-B and new airborne surveillance applications implementations.
