ABSTRACT

Part of what Aboriginal people have to say about what Europeans call nature is found in myths. Though this has not attracted a great deal of comment in the literature there are correlations between some scientifically or historically verified details and the information in some myths and legends. It is true that myths are quite likely to contain information that has been unintentionally distorted over time and are also likely to deal primarily with material of a religious or metaphorical nature, which was never intended to correspond to everyday reality. Nevertheless those that do correspond are interesting to note and add to the picture of Aboriginal environmental knowledge. This chapter looks at some such myths and legends.1
