ABSTRACT

We write this chapter from the joint perspectives of practice and management in social work, community work, corrections and restorative justice. Although from different backgrounds, each of us has the community’s interest at heart and together we believe we can contribute to the debate on the practical aspects of using restorative justice for family violence. In particular, we aim to provide a practice perspective regarding the benefits and risks involved. To take this discussion forward, we address three key questions and include relevant case examples where applicable. These are:

Can restorative justice be an effective and safe intervention for addressing family violence?

What components need to be in place to ensure any risk is minimized?

How can restorative justice processes assist in reducing the risk to vulnerable people and in the development of a safety plan?
