ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with the decisions mentoring coordinator need to make to recruit and match mentors and proteges. It deals with best practice on recruiting and matching processes for mentors and proteges. The chapter focuses on briefings and covers the information about the benefits of briefings. It presents the three elements of effective briefings: program goals and expectations, ethical and legal obligations, and the principles of good mentoring. The chapter also focuses on essential practices to consider in recruiting, matching, and briefing mentors and proteges. The key decision to make in recruiting the right participants is to determine if the program is voluntary, and to highlight selection criteria. Effective mentoring programs provide participants some input into the matching process. The chapter concludes with suggestions for how to facilitate briefings in ways that reflect best practice for adult learning, and that model good mentoring practices.
