ABSTRACT

Evangelical religion has linked the act of forgiveness with the life and death of Jesus; and three great types of theory have held and still hold the hearts of Christian people. The justification lies in the fact that we are dealing with these problems from the psychological. Powerful, however, as this theory has been in the removal of the sense of guilt for that is what essentially it removes it is inadequate as an objective ground of Atonement or even for the revelation of the nature of Sin. Illustrations from psychotherapy could be multiplied indefinitely for position in regard to the place of guilt in human fife. Before the true conviction of sin leading to repentance, forgiveness and salvation can be elicited, guilt has to be replaced by repentance, and then 'the light which shows us our sins can be the light that heals people'.
