ABSTRACT

I’m not going to talk much about standardized testing except to say that in my career it has been a necessary evil, as it is likely a part of yours as well. I have to write and administer Student Learning Objectives (SLOs); my Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) is weighted to include performance of my students on controversial state assessments; and I have tried to involve myself with the testing process as much as possible. Wait, you might be thinking: Why would someone who is such a big proponent of differentiation want to work on standardized tests? The answer is simple. Whenever educational decisions are being made, I want a seat at the table. I never pretend to agree when I don’t, and I feel better knowing what my students are up against.
