ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses practical implications of the art of living for education and schooling. It includes a discussion of ends and aims in education, the role and importance of the art of living for these ends and a further critique of Schmid's concept from an educational viewpoint. The chapter presents an argument for a shift of focus in educational theory and practice towards an education that is aimed at the development of an individual art of living for one's students. Schmid's approach to the art of living is a suitable starting point for an educational perspective, there are some limitations from an educational point of view that need to be addressed. Considering the speed of development in the last century, a widespread implementation of an art of living education could have a significant influence on societies in one generation's time and would make an immediate contribution to people's individual well-being and good life.
