ABSTRACT

[Bentham's Book of Fallacies existed in outline as early as 1806. It was first published by Dumont in French in 1816 under the title of Traite des sophismes politiques, as a second part of his Tactique des assemblies legislatives. Dumont rewrote several parts of it, omitted many of Bentham's references to British political and parliamentary life, and reclassified Bentham's list of fallacies in a way that seemed to him more satisfactory. In 1824, on Bentham's suggestion, Peregrine Bingham published a fuller and less inaccurate English edition. Bowring published the book in his collected works, Vol. II pp. 375–487; his version differs from Bingham's in several respects.
