ABSTRACT

Here a brief biography of Jung is provided alongside a description of his understanding of the process of individuation. This chapter also provides a clear overview of Jung’s dynamic psyche and the union of opposites. This is particularly important as it will be drawn upon later in Kierkegaard and Nietzsche: polar opposites in the mind of Jung. Attention is given to Jung’s observation that the absence of religious meaning is a major component of most illnesses, particularly that of the neurosis – and again a parallel is found in what Jung interprets as a misunderstanding of spiritual rebirth leading to neurotic decay, which Kierkegaard characterises as the ‘sickness unto death’.
