ABSTRACT

Teacher:  “A company has offices in three different locations A, B and C, and wants to link them with fibre optic cables to a centre point P. Where should P be located to minimise the total amount of cable? Let’s start by assuming the triangle ABC is isosceles with AB = AC. Look at the diagram. I’m assuming that the centre point will be on the line of symmetry.” [Note: this can be proved if necessary using the methods of Chapter 28 on Minimising via Reflection.]
