ABSTRACT

Community development strategies on any large development emerge over time as residents enter into discussions and requirements become clear. Clearly, the responsibility for a sustainable community lies both with the developer – during planning and construction and immediately following its completion – and with local authorities and other partners. The components and sub-components described in The Egan Review are themselves a set of aims and objectives which might be adapted to form the basis for a sustainable community strategy, leading to the development of appropriate tactics and providing indicators by which the work may be measured. Within a large-scale development, a community facility can also provide a perfect location for ongoing pre-planning consultation and community relations during construction. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives can provide a means by which the development team remains attached, albeit perhaps indirectly, to a new community when the physical building of the community is complete.
