ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides insights from individual dance practitioners who are also researchers. They are knowledgeable of their respective fields, and most are involved in choreographic processes from an internal, experiential or critical perspective. The book aims to interrogate the nature of contemporary choreography in selected contexts from a synthesis of practical and critical perspectives. It engages with discussions about dance dramaturgy. The book focuses on choreography with particular client groups or environments in mind: community groups, site-specific dance making, social inclusion, integrated disabled and non-disabled dancers, elderly dancers or work in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. It interrogates some of the debates about choreography from a conceptual or philosophical perspective. There are also some more unusual interventions to delight the reader. There is no doubt that what is reflected are significant choreographic concerns of the second decade of the twenty-first century.
