ABSTRACT

The challenge of writing about social media is that it is in constant flux, with new platforms emerging whilst older ones that once seemed established, such as Bebo and Vine, close. This chapter focuses on the different uses of social media within choreography, rather than on the platforms themselves. It offers some thoughts and approaches that will remain pertinent and helpful in the future. A range of social media platforms were developed, building on the ideological and technical foundations for Web 2.0, enabling the creation and exchange of user-generated content. A number of dance companies have begun to explore the potential of social media platforms to create online collaborative spaces for the development of new work. Social media offers powerful platforms for collaboration and co-creation, and for some companies these platforms offer a new environment for audiences to experience dance work.
