ABSTRACT

SNOMED CT stands for Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine, Clinical Terms. SNOMED CT is a standardized, “controlled” medical terminology that supports the capture of client health care information in an electronic health record (EHR) system. Information captured can later be retrieved and used for multiple purposes, or exchanged during transitions of care between multiple care specialties and sites of care. SNOMED CT reduces variability in the way clinical data are captured and encoded, thereby allowing information to be aggregated in a semantically meaningful way; aggregated data can ultimately contribute to improvements in care delivery. It might be helpful to picture SNOMED CT as the world’s biggest thesaurus specifically designed for the healthcare field.
