ABSTRACT

Teaching in the schools requires that the instructor have a music education degree. The Music Educators National Conference is one of the leading advocates for music programs at all levels of education. College teaching jobs are advertised in the Chronicle of Higher Education, and listed online by the College Music Society for members. For many years, college music programs focused on music performance, music education, music history, and music theory and composition. Students were expected to find careers as teachers or performers, but little attention was paid to other music industry careers. England boasts some music industry programs that are more innovative than the typical American program. The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts has tremendous music industry connections in England, because of its associations with Paul McCartney, the late George Martin, and others. Mark Hanson provides a great example of how a musician can lead a reasonable life combining his various interests with a relatively stable lifestyle.
