ABSTRACT

Europe Union (EU) news has always struggled to find a place in the national media. In part, this is probably because of the traditional structure of newspapers: should news from Brussels be on the domestic, political, economic or foreign pages? EU decisions are taken outside the country's borders but the EU laws are just as much national laws as if they were passed in the national parliament. Most national newspapers and trade magazines however choose to take a national angle on EU news. There are a few highly specialized EU media outlets: MLex covers competition, regulatory and antitrust news, ENDS covers environmental news with a regulatory focus and Agra Europe covers the Common Agriculture Policy. They are of very high quality but written for specialists and are behind pay-walls. The UK media is different from the other European national media when it comes to covering the EU.
