ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with the book Fifty Shades of Grey as a stark metaphor of the role of trust in romantic relationships. It reviews the research findings regarding the Attachment Theory and Faith-Romantic Approach to romantic relationships and compared the two. The chapter draws upon Evolutionary Theory as one account of the origins of trust in romantic relationships. It culminates in recommendations for how people could deal with betrayal in romantic relationships. The Faith-Romantic Approach to trust in romantic relationships has been advanced by Rempel and colleagues. Researchers have emphasised that trust between romantic partners is a dyadic process. The rates of reported infidelity are not very comforting for people who want a long-term monogamous romantic relationship. In a test of the mutual responsiveness model Shallcross and Simpson had heterosexual couples complete the Faith-Romantic Trust scale as a measure of their chronic trust.
