ABSTRACT

This chapter describes that education studies can provide key themes that can facilitate reflection on education more broadly than just at the classroom level. It offers a different approach which could form the basis of a compulsory unit or programme of work for both pre-service and practising teachers, as well as being informative for students of education studies, leaders, policy makers, parents and politicians. Back in the 1890s, when considering the function of the study of psychology for educationists, William James stated that one makes a great mistake to think that the discipline can provide definite programmes, schemes and methods of instruction for specific classroom contexts. Education studies became a recognized component of teacher preparation programmes and were generally well received by staff, students and education authorities. Education studies, as a distinct field of study divorced from any practical or professional preparation, have grown greatly in many universities.
