ABSTRACT

Information and communications technology (ICT) encompasses radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, and satellite systems, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning. In recent years, the proliferation of the use of ICT in an educational context has raised questions as to the extent to which it should be used in the classroom. National professional standards for teaching in various countries describe the necessity for teachers to use ICT to facilitate students' learning and broaden their opportunities to engage with an extensive variety of resources. By using ICT one can create multi-sensory classrooms in which 'students can experience highly sophisticated visual images, text, animation, sound - all sorts of sensory experiences'. Teachers can use ICT to tailor learning programmes to suit various levels of learning.
