ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a number of aspects relating to motor difficulties and motivation. Motor coordination difficulties can be referred to as dyspraxia or developmental coordination disorder. Macintyre has developed handbooks of approaches on motor development, particularly for children from the early years to 11. The work of Kirby, Sugden, Beveridge, Edwards and Edwards has made significant impact in relation to motor difficulties and particularly developmental coordination difficulties. Dyspraxia is a more commonly used term for developmental coordination disorders. It proposes some of the characteristic areas of problems as related to dyspraxia. These characteristics are presented for illustrative purposes and to provide a basis on which to appreciate some of the overlap that can be found across different Specific learning difficulties. A positive school ethos is important for all learners but for children with any type of educational challenge it is essential.
