ABSTRACT

This chapter explores additional policies which need to link to Supporting Children with Medical Conditions policy to effectively meet the needs of children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. In our Teaching for Life research, teachers' descriptions about how they were made aware of the needs of pupils with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions highlighted a general absence of any frameworks or planned whole-school policies. The teachers identified that they wanted a policy which would include how and when a multi-professional team could work together to plan for an individual child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. The policy should conform to the conventions of management information systems (MIS) and it should be laid out, signed off and stored in standard format, conforming to school's other policies. The chapter provides information about how to support children with medical needs when they change schools or need to reintegrate into the school after a period of absence or when their medical/health care needs change.
