ABSTRACT

This chapter explores appropriate and sensitive ways to share information with others. Teachers in the research identified a number of key concerns that they had about communicating information about the condition of a child with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions to others. A teacher may focus on supporting communication between a parent and their child first. Once a partnership of parent, teacher and child is established, it is easier to collectively discuss wider communication. The Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (DfE/DH) discusses the sharing of information between education, health care and social care providers. Knowing when and how to share information about the needs of a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition is crucial. In this, the statutory requirements and protocols around data protection must be understood and upheld.
