ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on the impact of social skills and/or social isolation on the learning process. It introduces provision mapping as a way to plan for and record additional strategies and interventions that are needed for the individual or whole class. Reflecting on appropriate teaching and learning approaches is a natural and significant part of the daily role of the teacher; it is something teachers are familiar and confident with. Teaching for Life research found that when faced with teaching children who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, teachers lacked confidence about how to manage this. Learning is a largely social process, and whilst the primary focus of the teacher will be on their teaching and learning approaches, the provision and support planned and the curriculum on offer, it is also important for staff to be mindful of the social aspects of learning and the implications of this for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition.
