ABSTRACT

Energy is crucial for development. Fossil fuels as well as renewables are the basis not only for industrialization and economic growth, but also for all sorts of human development. At the same time, producing and consuming energy have severe impacts on health and the environment. International organizations and donors therefore advocate renewables in developing countries. They stress the strong nexus between modern renewable energy sources and sustainable, environmentally friendly development (e.g. BMZ 2008; IEA 2012; OECD and IEA 2010; United Nations 2010). Renewable energy technologies could meet future demand with fewer negative side effects than fossil fuels.
