ABSTRACT

The quote in the title of this chapter is from an interview with a Pākehā (New Zealand European) father, talking about how he brings up his children with his Māori partner. It places his efforts to give his mixed race children a sense of who they are within New Zealand’s institutionalised narrative of Māori and Pākehā as equal partners in the bicultural nation-state endeavour.
